The month of April has begun, Camp NaNoWriMo is in full swing, and there are so many exciting writing things on the horizon! Between Camp NaNo and the end of the semester approaching, I am busy, busy, busy. I expect my blog posts will be a little shorter this month than usual, but never fear, I will be here each week with something new to share with you. Today, I want to share my writing goals for the second quarter of the year which lasts from April to June. The method I use for goal setting is one that I learned from the fabulous Jenna Moreci. A lot of writers across the web have adopted this method because it works so well! Basically, you make a list of 10-20 goals for the quarter, and the aim is to complete at least half. I create two separate lists, one for writing, and one for everything else. I have found that splitting up the lists works well for me because it ensures that I get both writing and personal goals accomplished. So, I separate them out and complete at least half of each list. This coming quarter’s goals are ambitious, but I am confident that I can get them done!
Goal № 1: Write one blog post per week
This goal was on my list last quarter, and it went quite well! I’m going to keep it up this quarter and bring new content to my blog every week.
Goal № 2: Complete Camp NaNoWriMo
I set a goal for Camp NaNo of 20,000 words. I’m working on my novel for Camp NaNo, and since I am writing other things at the same time, I wanted to keep the goal realistic and attainable. So far, I’m ahead by over 1000 words. Hopefully, I’ll be able to up my word count before the end of the month.
Goal № 3: Reach 100 Twitter Followers
So, apparently I was living under a rock up until a couple of months ago, because until then, I didn’t have a twitter. For those of you who have been in the twitter game for a while, 100 followers may not seem like much, but you know, gotta start somewhere! Want to follow me? Click here!
Goal № 4: Complete Act I of Ingora Gray
Ingora Gray is my current work in progress, and I want to finish the first Act this quarter. I am so excited to dive into writing! I spent last quarter up to my ears in the planning phase, and I am looking forward to bringing that mess of notes to life.
Goal № 5: Submit 3 Pieces for Publication
This one is pretty self-explanatory. If you, like me, are looking to submit work for publication, especially if you are unpublished, check out the Places to Submit page that I’ve put together. It is by far not an exhaustive list, but it’s a good place to start!
Goal № 6: Read 9 Books
I’m not so great at keeping up with reading, so this is a particularly important goal. I predict that audiobooks will be instrumental in completing this one. Here are the books I am planning to read over the next three months.
- Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
- The Human Stain by Philip Roth
- The Naturals by Jennifer Barnes
- Egg & Spoon by Gregory Maguire
- The Diviners by Libba Bray
- The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
- Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
- This Side of Home by Renée Watson
- Thief of Lies by Brenda Drake
I’ve already read the first one on my list, so I think I’m off to a good start!
Goal № 7: Read 1 Craft Book
Remember when I said I’m not so good at keeping up with reading? Well, I guess nine books just wasn’t ambitious of enough. Besides a nice even ten sounds good, right? I’m not exactly sure what book I want to read yet, so if you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
Goal № 8: Complete 2 Short Stories
I’ve already got one short story draft complete, and I’m loving it so far. I thoroughly enjoy writing short stories, and I’m excited to get two completed and polished by the end of the quarter.
Goal № 9: Create a Goodreads Profile
This is actually already done, so, check! You can check it out here!
Goal № 10: Make 3 New Vlogs
This last quarter I tried my hand at vlogging and found that I really enjoyed it! I want to continue doing vlogs from time to time, and maybe even collaborate with some other writers. I have found that this is a great way to meet people, and I look forward to seeing where the vlogging journey takes me!
So there you have it, my goals for the second quarter of 2016! I am really looking forward to what this quarter has to offer! Do you make quarterly goals? If you do, I’d love to hear them. Comment below with the goals you’re working on this quarter. If you’ve never made quarterly goals, give it a try! It’s a great way to keep you on track.
