This week, I was excited and grateful to be a guest vlogger on one of my favorite YouTube channels, the YA WordNerds. This group of ladies posts videos every day of the week about YA books and writing, and on Sundays, they host a live chat. When they asked if I would guest vlog, I immediately agreed. Yet, when I began thinking about everything that this task would require of me, I started to get a little nervous. The excitement didn’t fade, but I began to realize just how important it is to be asked to guest vlog on someone else’s channel. Here are the things that I kept in mind while I was working on my first ever guest vlog.
One thing I want to say before diving into the thick of this post is that these things are useful to think about for more than guest vlogging. They can also be applied to guest posts on other’s blog as well.
Match the tone of the channel you are guest vlogging for.
It is important to match the tone of the channel, so that it fits seamlessly with already produced content. You want your contribution to the channel to feel as if it belongs there. Here is how I look at it. I think the term “guest” vlogger can be misleading. If you think about the idea of having someone stay at your home. There is a reciprocal relationship between the person visiting and the person who lives there. You’re job as a host is to make the guest “feel at home”. However, the reverse is true in the case of guest vlogging. Instead, you must adapt yourself to the “home” of the channel. It is your job to blend in and look as if you’ve been a part of their work for a long time. There are a couple of ways to achieve this. First, you must do your research. Watch other videos in that they have posted and get a good idea of the format and tone they use. Is it formal or conversational? It’s also important to match your content to the type of content the channel produces. If you are creating a vlog for a channel that discusses home cooked meals, you shouldn’t present a video that suggests the best restaurants to eat. Make sure what you are discussing is in the realm of what the channel covers. Another, more logistical, way to make sure your vlog blends in with the rest on the channel, is to follow the format that the channel has in place. This means using their signoff, incorporating their logos or opening theme, and presenting your content in the same way that they do (i.e. if they use a step by step how to method, you should use that too). Viewers expect certain things when they return to a channel, and as a guest vlogger, it is your job to adhere to those expectations.
Maintain your own personality.
This may sound contradictory to what I just discussed. However, what is important here is balance. Think of the parameters set by the channel of the structure of a home, and your personality as the interior. You must work within the walls of the structure, but after that, you can decorate it however you’d like. Personality is crucial for maximizing the benefits you can receive from guest vlogging. In my case, I was asked to do a guest vlog for a group that has a much bigger following than I do. That is a great part of the writing community. People help each other network and communicate with other writers, and I was so thankful that the WordNerds wanted to help me with this! However, being a guest on an important channel is not all it takes. People want to get to know you, and you only have minutes to do this. This means they should get a good idea of who you are, as well as some sense of your style. Being asked to guest vlog, especially for a channel with a following much bigger than your own, is a great opportunity to be given. So take advantage of it, and don’t forget to thank the people who gave it to you!
Guest vlogging is a big responsibility.
The last thing I think is very important to focus on is the responsibility you have in being asked to guest vlog. The people who you are guest vlogging for are essentially vouching for you. They are putting their stamp of approval on you work, and it is your responsibility to live up to that. The host of the channel has put a lot of trust in you and has given you a great opportunity. You owe it to them to put your best work out there.
The experience of guest vlogging was absolutely wonderful! I am so grateful to the WordNerds for giving me the opportunity and would like to publicly extend my thanks! Not only has it helped me find a place in the online writing community. It helped me reflect on my own style, and I’ve learned quite a lot. If any of you get the opportunity to guest vlog or post, I encourage you to take it. It is a great experience! If you want to watch my vlog, you can see it here, on the WordNerd’s channel.
